Run Fast. Stand Still: An Interactive Workshop for Writers of All Genres

The Flint Festival of Writers is offering a free workshop for area writers Thursday, May 14th at 7 PM. Run Fast. Stand Still: An Interactive Workshop for Writers of All Genres is an opportunity for writers to practice their craft while connecting with fellow local writers.

Workshop leader, Sarah Carson, explains that this workshop is, “a fun, inviting way to gather from afar as writers of all genres and experience levels. I hope the workshop might be especially helpful to anyone who has ever struggled with a perfectionism streak or inner critic that keeps them from writing.”

Interested participants can visit Facebook to learn more or complete registration here. The full event description and registration can be found below.

The first digital experience developed for area writers by the festival, this workshop will be presented via Zoom and hosted by Executive Director Sarah Carson and President Katie Curnow. The festival board hopes to offer more activities online to keep writers connected during the stay-at-home order in effect.

“There are so many reasons we need to be writing now. As creative people, we need to continue to flex our literary muscles and keep up with our craft. As human beings, we need an outlet to express our fears and our hopes and our anger and our joys. As citizens of the world, we need to record what is happening and how we feel about it and what we hope we can learn from this. Many of us are strapped for time and energy as this crisis plays out. Creative writing can be an act of care for ourselves, each other and the future.”

– Sarah Carson, Flint Festival of Writers Executive Director

The Flint Festival of Writers is committed to serving Flint-area writers through programming and resources. We support the literary tradition and writing done in and about Flint and cultivate dynamic resources and experiences for Flint writers and readers.

Run Fast. Stand Still: An Interactive Workshop for Writers of All Genres

In Zen in the Art of Writing, Ray Bradbury writes, “Run fast, stand still. This, the lesson from lizards. For all writers. Observe almost any survival creature, you see the same. Jump, run, freeze. In the ability to flick like an eyelash, crack like a whip, vanish like steam, here this instant, gone the next—life teems the earth…What can we writers learn from lizards, lift from birds? In quickness is truth. The faster you blurt, the more swiftly you write, the more honest you are. In hesitation is thought.”

Join the Flint Festival of Writers for an hour-long, interactive workshop where we will practice running fast and standing still. Hosted by the Festival’s Executive Director Sarah Carson and President Katie Curnow, we’ll talk about how we can build a writing practice on quickness and truth and engage in writing activities meant to harness this swiftness.

The workshop will take place via Zoom on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. EST.
